FAQ Overview

ScoreCam

How to switch (or change) the scoreboard?

To switch (or change) the scoreboard, launch Scoreboard Settings, which can be accessed two ways: (1) Go to Settings (the gear icon on the top right of the page) → then tap “Launch Scoreboard Settings,” or (2) tap and hold (longpress) on the scoreboard. From there, you can change the scoreboard style, flip teams and scores, alter team names and colors, and so much more.

If you regularly use different scoreboards for different sports, teams, or venues, Scoreboard Profiles let you save and instantly switch between complete scoreboard configurations — including team names, colors, logos, clock settings, and more. Tap the edit button on the scoreboard to create and manage profiles.

Can I save my ScoreCam recordings directly to an external USB drive?

Yes! ScoreCam can save recordings directly to an external USB-C drive, bypassing your device’s internal storage entirely. This is ideal for coaches and videographers who need large capacity storage or want recordings saved straight to portable media.

Requirements:

  • iPhone or iPad with a USB-C port (iPhone 15 or later, or any USB-C iPad)
  • iOS/iPadOS 17 or later
  • A USB drive with sufficient sustained write speed for your recording setting (see FAQ: “What kind of external SSD do I need?”)
  • A USB-C to USB-C cable rated for USB 3.1 or higher

To enable external drive recording:

  1. Connect your drive to your device’s USB-C port
  2. Open ScoreCam and go to Settings → Camera Options → Save to External Drive
  3. Toggle it on, then tap Choose Folder to pick a destination folder on the drive
  4. Tap Record — ScoreCam will write the video file directly to the drive

Important notes:

  • Completed recordings are not saved to the Photos app — use the Files app to browse your drive and access the video files
  • Keep the drive connected for the entire recording session; do not unplug until the “Saving to external drive…” spinner disappears after stopping
  • If the drive is not accessible at the start of recording, ScoreCam will display an error and offer to re-select the folder or record to Photos instead

What kind of external drive do I need? What are the minimum requirements for recording to an external drive?

The key requirement is sustained write speed — your drive needs to write data at least as fast as ScoreCam is producing it. Most modern USB 3.0 drives (SSDs and fast flash drives) meet this easily. Old USB 2.0 thumb drives and spinning hard drives typically cannot.

Minimum sustained write speed by recording setting:

  • 1080p 30fps (default): ~3 MB/s
  • 1080p 60fps / high bitrate: ~6 MB/s
  • 4K 30fps: ~13 MB/s
  • 4K 60fps / high bitrate: ~40 MB/s

Cable matters most: The most common source of problems is the cable, not the drive. Use a USB-C to USB-C cable rated for USB 3.1 or higher. A cheap or USB 2.0 cable will cap throughput regardless of how fast the drive is.

Hub or dock (if used): Make sure the port your drive is plugged into supports USB 3.0 passthrough. Many hubs have USB 2.0 ports mixed in — check the hub’s specifications.

Drive getting warm: All USB drives get warm during sustained recording — this is normal and expected. It is caused by the NAND flash controller writing data continuously, and no app can prevent it. ScoreCam already records in HEVC (H.265) by default, which minimises the amount of data written compared to older H.264 encoding. Let the drive sit in open air rather than in a pocket or bag. Warmth alone is not a cause for concern.

Drive disconnecting mid-recording: If your drive disconnects (as opposed to just getting warm), it is likely drawing more current than the phone’s USB port can supply under sustained load. Try using a powered hub (a hub with its own power bank or wall adapter connected). This is a troubleshooting step — most drives work fine bus-powered.

ScoreCam » Purchases

I purchased the Live Stream/PRO monthly subscription. Is the Live Stream option for one device only? I tried the restore function unsuccessfully.

All In-App purchases, including subscriptions, can be used across multiple devices, as long as you are using the same Apple ID or are using Family Sharing.

Here is the FAQ link on how to restore: ScoreCam FAQ: How to Restore

Apple will not allow you to make the same purchase twice when using the same Apple ID so even if you try to buy it again, you will be presented with a dialog that basically says, "You already made this purchase, would you like to restore?"

Just make sure you are 100% sure which Apple ID you used for the original purchase and the Restore button will work.

Restoring and purchasing is all handled by Apple so if it's not working, try the following: (1) uninstalling the app, (2) restarting your phone, (3) reinstalling the app. [NOTE: Make sure you have no videos in the "Recovered Videos" file as these will be gone once you delete the app. Additionally, all your settings will be reset]

It could also be the case where you installed the app with one Apple ID and tried purchasing features with another Apple ID. That will likely cause issues, so make sure you install the app and purchase subscriptions with the same Apple ID, then the retore function will work across multiple devices.

How do I restore my subscription on another device?

You can restore and use all In-App purchases, including subscriptions, across multiple devices as long as you are using the same Apple ID to both INSTALL ScoreCam and RESTORE.

Here are the steps to restore an In-app purchase:

  1. Open ScoreCam
  2. Go to Settings (tap on the gear icon on the top right of the page)
  3. Tap "Launch the ScoreCam Store" (at the very top of the page)
  4. Tap the "Restore" button (on the top right of the page)

Here is a list of other common issues and how to resolve them:

1) You downloaded the app using a different Apple ID and can't restore using the Apple ID used to purchase ScoreCam:

  1. Remove the ScoreCam app from the device
  2. Sign out of your Apple ID (the one you did not pruchase ScoreCam with): go to your device's Settings app -> tap on your name (at the very top of page) -> scroll to the bottom, tap "Sign Out" -> enter your Apple ID password and tap "Turn Off"
  3. Sign back in with the Apple ID you used to purchase ScoreCam
  4. Re-install ScoreCam
  5. Restore your purchases (by following the steps above)

2) Someone in your family has logged in with a different Apple ID: See steps above.

Is the PRO version price per year or per month?

The PRO version In-App purchase is a one-time charge for as long as the app is available on the App Store. In other words, the PRO version is not a monthly/yearly subscription and will last indefinitely.

However, the PRO version does not include Live Streaming, so if you will ever be needing that you should try the monthly or yearly subscription [Live Steaming + PRO] as those In-App purchases include everthing in the PRO version as well as Live Streaming (and any other added features in future versions of ScoreCam).

How does the 1-Week Free Trial work?

When you purchase the 1 Month or 1 Year subscription you have 1 FREE week to evaluate ScoreCam using the version you pruchased. Payments will be charged to your account after the 1 week trial period and your subscription will start at the end of your week trial.

If you decide you would like to cancel the subscription, you can do that by following these instructions which are provide by Apple.

You will still be able to use ScoreCam until your free week has expired, so be sure to take advantage of that! If you decide later you do want to subscribe, after you have cancelled, you can simply repurchase the subscription... but you will not keep getting a free week trial each time.

What are the limitations when no In-App purchases are made?

It is highly recommended to use the 1 week FREE trial when evaluating ScoreCam, because, after all, it is FREE and you get FULL functionality of the version you purchase.

However, if you have not made any In-App purchases and do not want to use the FREE trial, you are limited to 2 minutes (or 120 seconds) of video recording time and do not have access to the PRO features or Live Streaming features or Branding features. In addition, you are not able to make any personalized modifications to the scoreboard and you are not able to use the Scoreboard Remote features.

What package do I need to purchase to allow me to video a game and start/pause multiple times, yet only have a single recording?

Any of the In-App purchases will allow you to video a game and start/pause multiple times in a single recording. The Starter Sports Pack will allow you to do this as it offers basic recording features. The PRO version will allow you to do this, as well as give you access to more features/scoreboard designs. Additionally, if you want Live Streaming you must pruchase either the Live Streaming/PRO verison or the Branding/Live Streaming version-- both versions include all PRO features and are available for monthly/yearly subscriptions.

The PRO and Starter Sports Pack are both one-time charges that last indefinitely.

How do I get a refund or cancel my subscription?

If you unsubscribe before your FREE, 1 week trial ends, you will not be charged.

If you are past the free week, you could try to get a refund by sending a request to Apple: Request a refund for apps or content that you bought from Apple

Note: Apple manages refunds and we don't have control on whether you will get one or not. If you don't do this often and you are within a week or so into your subscription, you should have no issues.

Is it possible to upgrade from the PRO version to the Live Streaming + PRO subscription?

First off, thank you for purchasing and supporting ScoreCam!

Unfortunately there is no current path to upgrade from a lifetime purchase [PRO version] to a subscription [Live Streaming +PRO]. Apple handles all the financials so there is no way for me to give you a refund directly. However, I would suggest you ask for a refund from Apple and then go ahead and purchase the subscription you want.

Here is the official support link from Apple on how to get a refund: Request a refund for apps or content that you bought from Apple.

How do I upgrade from a monthly subscription to a yearly subscription?

First thing to do is to make sure you cancel your subscription to avoid auto-renewal. Your monthly subscription will be valid until the expiration date. Once your monthly subscription is cancelled, you will be able to resubscribe to the subscription of your choice (annual or monthly).

ScoreCam » App Settings

Settings appear nearly unreadable, can you help?

The likely cause of this is due to using "Larger Text" setting under your device. Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Display & Text Size. Once there, turn OFF the "Larger Text" feature and the ScoreCam settings should appear normal again.

My screen keeps going dark on my device when I try to use the remote app. How do I fix this?

If your ScoreCam device is dimming try turning off the "Dim Display when Connected" on your ScoreCam device. Do this by going to Settings -> ScoreBoard Remote -> then disabling (turn off) "Dim Display when Connected".

If this issue is occuring on your Remote device you can change this by going to your device's Settings app -> Display & Brightness, and adjusting the brightness of your device there.

When using the video stabilization feature (while also using 4K Video Resolution) the saved video appears "jerky" or "choppy" (jitter) and is not smooth. How did I fix this?

First thing to check is to make sure your device supports "High Efficiency" format (iPhone 7 or better; iPad 6th generation or better). See the Apple support document Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices for more information.

If your device supports "High Efficiency" format make sure this is selected under the "Video Format" setting. Do this by going to ScoreCam Settings -> Video Camera (PRO) -> Custom Settings (enabled) -> Video Format -> then selecting "High Efficiency."

If your device does not support "High Efficiency" format you should not use 4K Video, otherwise you will see these video artifacts/issues.

How do I disable the audio and still record video? Or remove the audio completely before sharing?

You can remove audio before recording a video by going to ScoreCam Settings -> Camera Options -> Show Audio Control (enabled), then press done. After, tap on the microphone button (above the camera remote), this will disable/turn off the audio. Make sure there a line through the microphone.

You can also remove the audio from a saved video by going to your Photo library app -> tapping "Edit" at the top right of the video -> then tap the speaker icon on the top left of the page and make sure there is line through the speaker (this will turn off the audio), then press Done (at the bottom of the page). This means that the audio has been removed from your video.

The video resolution is quite poor when I use custom video settings 1080p at 60fps. How do I fix this?

60fps is a little tricky and some adjustments may be required.

First thing is to make sure you are using "High Efficiency" and not "Most Compatible" for the video format. Do this by going to ScoreCam Settings -> Video Camera (PRO) -> Custom Settings (enabled) -> Video Format, then make sure you hvae selected "High Efficiency."

If that doesn't help, try doubling the "Avg bitrate" (go to ScoreCam Settings -> Video Camera (PRO) -> Avg bitrate), and then decreasing until you get something that is acceptable.

Remember, bitrate is tied to quality but is also directly tied to file size so the smaller the bitrate the smaller the file size.

There are also reports of "focus hunting" when using 60fps so be sure to lock the focus and exposure. Do this by doing a long tap and hold on the screen until you see "AE/AF Locked." (If you want to turn this off, tap and hold again until you see "Auto Enabled")

How do I go to the Scoreboard Settings from the ScoreCam app?

The easier way to go to the Scoreboard settings is to tap and hold on the actual scoreboard (this will take you directly to the Scoreboard Settings).

Another way to to go to the Scoreboard Settings is to go to the main Settings (gear icon to the top right corner of the page) -> make sure "Show Scoreboard" is enabled (turned on) -> tap "Launch Scoreboard Settings."

I have a recovered video but I am getting the following error when trying to save/move this to my Photos library: "Error! Video could not be saved" and then some other information like: "Error Domain = PHPhotosErrorDomain code=-1". How can I recover or save this video?

If you get this error, you can still transfer the file to your Mac or PC.

To transfer files with your Mac (macOS 10.15 or later): See the Apple Support article Use the Finder to share files between your Mac and your iPhone.

To transfer files with your Windows PC or Mac (macOS 10.14 or earlier): See the Apple Support article Use iTunes to share files between your computer and your iOS or iPadOS device.

Videos with "0:00" indicated are not recoverable.

If you are encountering this error often, this may be from an Apple installation issue. After you have saved all videos from the "Recovered Videos" you should then remove the app, restart the device (don't skip this part) and then reinstall.

NOTE: This error is caused by a problem in Apple's Photos framework in iOS and the issue has been reported to Apple, and should be fixed in a future update. However, to help Apple, it's helpful to submit a bug report yourself with diagnostic information, you can do this through their Feedback Assistant Website.

What are the Level and Grid overlays and how do I turn them on?

ScoreCam has two optional camera overlays to help you frame your shots — both are found in Settings → Camera Options:

  • Level — displays a horizon indicator on screen so you can tell when the camera is perfectly straight. The indicator turns green when the device is level.
  • Grid — overlays a rule-of-thirds grid on the camera preview to help you compose the shot. The grid lines do not appear in the recorded video.

To enable either overlay, go to Settings (the gear icon, top right) → Camera Options and toggle on Level or Grid. They take effect immediately on the camera preview screen.

Can I use the volume buttons to start and stop recording?

Yes — ScoreCam can use the volume buttons to control recording, just like the built-in Camera app. This is turned off by default and can be enabled in Settings → Camera Options → Volume Buttons Control Recording.

How it works:

  • Volume Up — starts the recording if one isn’t active, resumes a paused recording, or pauses a running recording.
  • Volume Down — stops the recording. If Show Stop Confirmation is also enabled, you will be asked to confirm before the recording stops.

While this setting is active the volume buttons do not change the system volume — they are dedicated to recording control only. Requires iOS 17 or later for full support; on older iOS versions the feature uses a fallback method that may be less reliable.

ScoreCam » Scoreboard Settings

How do I access the Scoreboard Settings?

On the ScoreCam app you can do this two ways: (1) Go to Settings (gear icon on the top right of the page) -> tap on "Launch Scoreboard Settings." (2) Tap and hold on the scoreboard, which will take you directly to the Scoreboard Settings.

On the Scoreboard Remote app, you can do this by going to Settings (gear icon on the top right of the page), which features all scoreboard setting features.

When using the Volleyball scoreboard, how do I change the set values?

On the ScoreCam app, you can change the set values by going to the Scoreboard Settings: either by (1) tapping and holding the scoreboard, or (2) going to Settings (gear icon on the top right of the page) -> Scoreboard -> tap "Launch Scoreboard Settings." Once there, at the bottom of the page you can change the set values. There a set value in between the "home" and "away" values, used to determine what set number it is. There is also another set value at the bottom of the page to determine how many sets each team has won.

On the Scoreboard Remote app, you first must make sure "Show Set Scores" is enabled. You can do this by going to Settings (gear icon on the top right of the page) -> then enable "Show Set Scores" (near the top of the page). Once enabled, on the scoreboard there will be two smaller set values, which you can change by tapping on the number or by tapping and holding the number. Another way to reset the set values/scores/clock is to go to Settings -> Scoreboard -> tap on "Reset All Scores, Period & Clock."

How do I create custom team colors?

Tap the color swatch next to the team name in Scoreboard Settings to open the color picker. You can choose from the color wheel, enter specific hex values, or use the eyedropper to sample any color on your screen. The updated color appears on the scoreboard immediately.

Score text colors adjust automatically — each score label uses black or white based on which provides better contrast against the team’s background color.

To reuse colors across games: Save the team in the Team Library (tap the library icon next to the team name field in Scoreboard Settings). Saved teams store both the name and color, so you can apply them to any game with a single tap.

For the Longboard II scoreboard, how do you change the FIRST SET value?

On the ScoreCam app, make sure the "Game Type" setting is set to "SET" or if you want to change this value, follow these steps. Launch the Scoreboard Settings -> tap on "Team Names, Colors & More" -> tap on "Game Type" -> select "Set" or whatever other value you desire (i.e., Game, Half, Per, Qtr, etc.).

Then to change the set number of sets won by each team, launch Scoreboard Settings -> go to the bottom of the page that says "Set" (in the middle between two numbers) -> then increase of the value of the set number for whichever team, then press "Done." The Longboard II will then read "HOME LEADS 1-0," for example, on the far right of the scoreboard.

How do I display the Branding images on screen?

You can toggle the branding image from the branding configuration settings (i.e., Scoreboard Settings > Branding) by enabling the "Show" toggle. This is the way to go if the image will always be on screen.

Alternatively you can also toggle branding images from a gesture setting. Under settings, go to the "Gesture Assignments" section and then assign "Toggle Brand Image 1" (or image 2) to the gesture. "Top Button Single Tap" is the easiest way to toggle branding.

What are Scoreboard Profiles and how do I use them?

Scoreboard Profiles let you save a complete set of scoreboard settings under a name, so you can switch between setups instantly — perfect if you record multiple sports, cover different teams, or move between venues.

What a profile saves:

  • Scoreboard style
  • Team names
  • Team colors and logos
  • Game clock and shot clock settings
  • Scoreboard position and size
  • Score animation style

To create a new profile:

  1. Tap the edit button on the scoreboard (or open Scoreboard Settings)
  2. Tap New Profile to launch the setup wizard
  3. Walk through the wizard steps — style, teams, position, clock, animation, and name
  4. Tap Save when finished

To switch profiles: Tap the edit button on the scoreboard and select a profile from the list. The scoreboard updates instantly.

You can also edit, duplicate, or delete profiles from the same screen.

Can I animate the scores when they change?

Yes. ScoreCam can animate the score display whenever the score is updated. Choose from six styles in Scoreboard Settings → Animations:

  • None — scores update instantly with no animation (default)
  • Fade Slow — scores fade out and back in slowly
  • Fade Fast — scores fade out and back in quickly
  • Dissolve — scores dissolve between the old and new value
  • Pop — scores briefly scale up before settling to the new value
  • Flip — scores flip like a card rotating in 3D

The animation plays on screen and is also recorded into the saved video, so it appears in your footage exactly as you see it on screen.

What are Scoreboard Profiles and how do I use them?

A Scoreboard Profile is a saved set of scoreboard settings — style, team names, colors, logos, position, clock configuration, and score animation style — stored under a name you choose. Profiles let you configure each team or tournament once and switch between them in seconds, without re-entering anything.

One profile is always active. Its settings are what appear on the scoreboard during recording. Switching profiles applies all of that profile’s settings immediately.

Profiles save: scoreboard style, team names, team colors, team logos, branding images, position, scale, margins, game clock settings, shot clock settings, and animation style. Live game state (current scores, period, running clock time) is never stored in a profile.

To create a profile:

  1. Open Scoreboard Settings → tap New Profile.
  2. A wizard walks you through: Style, Teams, Position, Game Settings, Clock, Shot Clock, Logos & Colors, Animation, and a name for the profile.
  3. The new profile activates automatically when the wizard completes.

To switch profiles: Open Scoreboard Settings → tap any profile name in the list. All settings change immediately.

Other options: Swipe left on a profile to Duplicate or Delete it. Long-press a row to drag and reorder. All fields except the scoreboard style can be edited after creation.

What is the Team Library and how do I use it?

The Team Library is a list of saved teams — each with a name and a team color — that you can quickly apply to any game without typing or color-picking again.

To save a team:

  1. Open Scoreboard Settings → tap the library icon next to either team name field.
  2. Tap Add Team, enter a name, pick a color, and save.

To apply a saved team:

  1. Tap the library icon next to the team name field.
  2. Tap the team you want — the name and color fill in automatically.

Saved teams are shared across all your Scoreboard Profiles. Updating a saved team does not retroactively change past recordings or active profiles.

What score animation styles are available?

ScoreCam offers six score animation styles. The animation plays in the camera preview and is burned into the recorded video when a point is scored. Choose your style in Scoreboard Settings → Animations → Score Animation.

  • None — Score updates instantly with no animation (default).
  • Fade Fast — Old score fades out quickly; new score fades in — a subtle, snappy transition.
  • Fade Slow — Same fade effect at a slower pace.
  • Dissolve — Old and new scores cross-fade simultaneously — the outgoing score fades out as the incoming score fades in.
  • Pop — Score briefly scales up then snaps back, drawing attention to the change with a bounce effect.
  • Flip — Score appears to fold away horizontally; the new value unfolds in — similar to a physical split-flap board.

The selected style is saved per Scoreboard Profile, so you can use different animations for different teams or sports.

Can I make the on-screen scoring controls less visible while recording?

Yes — use the Controls Transparency slider in Scoreboard Settings → Game Clock. Drag it toward the minimum to make the on-screen score and clock controls semi-transparent so they draw less visual attention in the camera view. The minimum value keeps controls faintly visible so they remain tappable.

The transparency setting is saved in your Scoreboard Profile and persists across app relaunches.

Want to hide controls entirely? Connect a Scoreboard Remote and enable Settings → Scoreboard Remote → Hide Controls When Connected — this removes the on-screen controls from the camera device completely while the Remote is connected, giving the camera operator a completely clean view.

How do the Baseboard II on-screen controls work?

When Baseboard II is the active scoreboard style, a control panel appears on the right side of the camera view with five columns and a bottom toolbar.

Five columns (each with + and − buttons):

  • Balls — counts 0–3; automatically wraps back to 0 at 4 balls (a walk).
  • Strikes — counts 0–2; automatically wraps back to 0 at 3 strikes (a strikeout).
  • Outs — counts 0–3; wraps back to 0 at 4.
  • Pitches — running pitch count; increments and decrements freely.
  • Inning — current inning number.

Bottom toolbar:

  • Reset B/S — resets Balls and Strikes to 0 at once (use at end of each at-bat).
  • Base buttons — four buttons representing “clear all” and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd base. Tap a base button to toggle a runner on that base. The active base highlights in the diagram. Tap “clear” to remove all runners.
  • Reset Pitches — resets the pitch count to 0.

All changes appear on the Baseboard II scoreboard overlay in real time.

How do penalty timers and the power play clock work on Hockeyboard?

The Hockeyboard includes built-in penalty timer support. Penalty controls are always visible on the operator panel and are available from Scoreboard Remote — you do not need to enable them separately.

Scoreboard Remote

Bluetooth connection drops every 15-20 seconds

If the Scoreboard Remote connection drops repeatedly at short intervals, try these steps:

  1. Update both apps to the latest version from the App Store. Recent releases include connection stability improvements.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices and both apps have Bluetooth permission (iOS Settings → [App name] → Bluetooth → ON).
  3. Keep the devices within reasonable range. Dense Bluetooth environments (crowded gyms, many BT devices nearby) can cause interference.
  4. Go to iOS Settings → Bluetooth and forget any old or unused Bluetooth pairings — stale pairings can interfere.
  5. Restart both devices fully (power off, power on), then reconnect.
  6. As a last resort, uninstall both apps, restart both devices, and reinstall from the App Store.

Scoreboard Remote: nothing shows up in the list of devices

ScoreCam connects to Scoreboard Remote using Bluetooth (Multipeer Connectivity). No pairing code or Wi-Fi router is required — the two apps discover each other automatically as long as Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.

If Scoreboard Remote is not finding ScoreCam, check these in order:

  1. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both devices — iOS Settings → Bluetooth → ON.
  2. Confirm Bluetooth permission for both apps — iOS Settings → [App name] → Bluetooth → ON. This is the most common silent failure cause.
  3. Make sure the Remote button in ScoreCam’s toolbar is highlighted blue (advertising). Without this step, Scoreboard Remote cannot find ScoreCam.
  4. Bring the devices within 30 feet of each other. Initial discovery is more reliable at close range.
  5. If either app is in the background, bring it to the foreground. iOS restricts Bluetooth advertising from background apps.
  6. Force-quit and reopen both apps, then try again.
  7. Make sure both apps are on the latest version — open the App Store and check for updates.

Is it possible to use ScoreCam on two devices simultaneously and control them with the same remote?

Sorry, no, it is not currenlty possible to control two or more ScoreCam devices from one Scoreboard Remote device. I would advice recording the video on ScoreCam with two different devices and controlling the video with two different devices using the Scoreboard Remote app (i.e., have two devices for each recording; one for recording, another for controlling).

Once I connect my Scoreboard Remote device (iPhone 4s), the Set number always reverts back to Set "1." How do I fix this?

Once you connect the Scoreboard Remote device to the ScoreCam device, all scoreboard information (the scores, set values, etc.) from the Scoreboard Remote app will sync up to the ScoreCam app.

You can change the set value/number from the Scoreboard Remote app by tapping on the set number or by tapping and holding on the set number and entering in the desired set value. Once the two devices are connected, any changes on ScoreCam or Scoreboard Remote will sync in either direction. (Except for Game Clock information. If connected, it is only one way: Remote to ScoreCam)

'BTLE not supported on this device' error

Update both ScoreCam and Scoreboard Remote to the latest version from the App Store. This error is from an old version of the connection method that is no longer used. Current versions use Multipeer Connectivity over Bluetooth and this error should not appear after updating.

If the error still appears after updating:

  • Confirm Bluetooth permission for both apps — iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth → make sure both ScoreCam and Scoreboard Remote are toggled ON.
  • Restart both devices fully and try again.
  • Reinstall both apps from the App Store as a last resort.

Bluetooth error: CBErrorDomain Code=14 'Peer removed pairing information'

Update both ScoreCam and Scoreboard Remote to the latest version. This error came from an older Bluetooth connection method that has since been replaced. Current versions use a different wireless connection that does not involve Bluetooth pairing — this error should not appear after updating.

If the error persists after updating:

  • Go to iOS Settings → Bluetooth and forget any old Scoreboard Remote or ScoreCam pairings listed there.
  • Force-quit both apps and reopen them.
  • If still occurring, reinstall both apps.

Spinning circle on remote, buttons don't work

The spinning circle usually means Scoreboard Remote is trying to connect but the connection stalled or was interrupted.

Try these steps in order:

  1. Force-quit both apps — on each device, swipe up from the bottom (or double-press Home) to see the app switcher, then swipe the app away. Reopen both apps and try connecting again. This resolves the spinning circle in most cases.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices — iOS Settings → Bluetooth → ON.
  3. Check that the Remote button in ScoreCam is highlighted blue (advertising). Tap it if it is not highlighted.
  4. Make sure both apps are on the latest version — check the App Store for updates.
  5. As a last resort, uninstall both apps, restart both devices, and reinstall from the App Store.

How do I tell my ScoreCam apart from others at a tournament?

When Scoreboard Remote connects to ScoreCam, it shows a list of nearby ScoreCam devices by name. By default, each device appears using its iPhone or iPad model name (for example, “Paul’s iPhone”). At a venue with multiple courts all running ScoreCam simultaneously, these default names can be hard to tell apart.

Set a custom Camera Name to identify your device in the picker:

  1. On the ScoreCam device, open the iOS Settings app
  2. Scroll down and tap ScoreCam
  3. Tap Scoreboard Remote
  4. Tap Camera Name and enter a descriptive label (for example: Court 1, Field A, or Main Camera)

The next time Scoreboard Remote scans for devices, it will show your custom name in the list instead of the device model name, making it easy to pick the correct court.

The Camera Name only needs to be set once per device and is remembered across sessions.

ScoreCam » Live Streaming

What do all the Live Streaming settings mean?

Author: Paul
Last update: 2022-02-19 05:17

ScoreCam indicates that I am Streaming Live but YouTube says it is not receiving data. How do I fix this?

Allow a minute or two of streaming for the indicators to show accurate information. If the health indicator is showing a gray color there is no data being uploaded so make sure you have an internet connection and it supports streaming.
A green indication is what you want but sometimes that is not possible, especially if you are competing for bandwidth at a tournament where WiFi and phone services are at their peak. A red indicator likely means your stream will appear choppy due to dropping video frames.
Some other things to try:
  • Try refreshing the YouTube page and wait at least a minute or more to be sure it's not a latency issue.
  • If all else fails, try force-closing ScoreCam app and try again (see Apple support documnet on How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch)
  • Or try uninstalling the app, restarting your phone, then reinstalling the app (NOTE: Make sure you have no videos in the "Recovered Videos" file as these will be gone once you delete the app. Additionally, all your settings will reset.]

YouTube stream key changes automatically?

Your YouTube stream key generally stays the same as long as you have Reusable stream key enabled in YouTube Studio — this is the default. The key only changes if you manually reset it in YouTube Studio.

If your key has changed:

  1. Go to studio.youtube.comGo liveStreaming software.
  2. Copy the new Stream Key and update it in ScoreCam: Settings → Live Streaming → tap your YouTube account (pencil icon) → Stream Key.

Avoid key management entirely: Switch to YouTube API mode in ScoreCam. Sign in with Google (OAuth) and ScoreCam handles the stream key automatically — there is nothing to copy or paste, and you never need to worry about it changing.

Can I still pause the recording when live streaming?

Yes, when you are Live Streaming AND you have "Save Video While Streaming" enabled you can pause the recording. (Live Stream will not be paused and will continue streaming until you stop recording/streaming).

To enable "Save Video While Streaming" follow these steps: go to the main Settings -> make sure "Enable Live Stream" is turned on -> tap "Live Streaming Setup" -> then enable "Save Video While Streaming" (towards the middle of the page).

Do live stream settings affect saved video quality?

No — live stream video quality and local recording quality are configured separately in ScoreCam.

  • Local recording quality is set in Settings → Video Camera (PRO) → Custom Video Settings (codec, resolution, bitrate).
  • Live stream quality is set per-account in Settings → Live Streaming → [account] → Video Resolution and Bitrate.

You can stream at 720p 30fps (to save bandwidth) while simultaneously recording locally at 1080p 60fps — the two pipelines are independent. The local recording always uses the full composited video; the stream encoder downscales separately.

Viewers — fees, count, privacy?

Fees: There is no cost to viewers watching your stream on YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Live, or other platforms — these platforms are free to watch. Your ScoreCam subscription covers your ability to stream; viewers do not need any subscription.

Viewer count: Each platform provides its own viewer count in its dashboard or studio app while you are live. YouTube shows concurrent viewers in YouTube Studio; Twitch shows live viewer count in the Creator Dashboard.

Privacy options: Privacy settings depend on the platform:

  • YouTube — Choose Public, Unlisted, or Private when setting up your YouTube API account in ScoreCam. Unlisted is recommended for team-only streams (anyone with the link can watch, but it won’t appear in search).
  • Twitch — All streams are public by default. Twitch does not offer built-in unlisted/private streams.
  • Other platforms — Privacy controls vary; check each platform’s documentation.

Services like Restream and Castr allow you to stream to multiple platforms simultaneously from a single ScoreCam account.

My live stream video quality is poor or low resolution. How do I fix it?

If your live stream looks blurry, pixelated, or lower resolution than expected, check these settings in order:

  1. Check Account Video Quality — Settings → Live Streaming → tap your account (pencil icon) → Video Resolution. Change to 1080p if your upload speed supports it (recommended: 5+ Mbps upload).
  2. Check your bitrate — In the same account editor, check the Bitrate value. Good starting points: 2,500 Kbps for 720p 30fps, 4,500 Kbps for 1080p 30fps. Twitch has a hard cap of 6,000 Kbps. You can always increase the bitrate manually if your connection supports it.
  3. Use High Efficiency (HEVC) recording format — Settings → Video Camera (PRO) → Custom Settings → Video Codec → High Efficiency. This improves local recording quality without affecting stream bandwidth.
  4. Check your upload speed — Run a speed test on the device. You need at least 3–5 Mbps sustained upload for 720p streaming; 5–8+ Mbps for 1080p. If your connection is unstable, enable Adaptive Bitrate (Settings → Live Streaming → Adaptive Bitrate).
  5. Reduce interference — Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular (or vice versa) if one is more stable at your venue.

YouTube requires subscribers to live stream

YouTube may require a minimum number of subscribers before enabling mobile live streaming via third-party apps like ScoreCam — but the exact threshold varies by account and changes over time. Check your channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio → Go Live, and contact YouTube Support for your specific requirements.

Alternatives if YouTube mobile live streaming is not available on your account:

  • Use Twitch — No subscriber requirement; lower streaming latency and great for live sports.
  • Use Restream or Castr — Sign up at restream.io or castr.io, connect your YouTube account there, and use their RTMP credentials in ScoreCam. This often bypasses the mobile threshold restriction.
  • Use YouTube stream key mode and create the broadcast from a desktop browser in YouTube Studio — sometimes this path has different eligibility than the mobile Go Live flow.

I am using YouTube to Live Stream. Is there a way to point my users to my current live stream or past live streams?

Yes, there are at least a couple options and depends on which version you are using for Live Streaming with YouTube.

If you are using YouTube Authentication you can point your users to your channel by copying and sending the URL of your channel by going to YouTube -> tap on the profile icon (at the top right of the page) -> tap on "Your Channel" (on the sidebar) -> then copying and sending the web page adress (URL; at the top of the webpage). NOTE: Users you send this URL to will have to click on your "Videos" section to view the live stream or past live streams. Make sure you video is public or the user subscribes your channel.

Another way to send users your live stream when using YouTube Authentication is through the ScoreCam app. Once ready to live stream, tap the "Set Up" button -> log into your YouTube account -> tap on the "Share" icon (right next to the "Go Live" button) -> then send your live stream link to whoever you want. NOTE: Make sure when you are setting up your Live Stream on the ScoreCam that the privacy setting (next to "Event Name" and above the "Go Live" button) is set to public or that the user subscribes to your channel.

If you are using YouTube Stream Now, you can point users to your latest live stream by following the steps above and sending users your channel URL. Another way to send users your live stream, as long as your Stream Key is the same, is thorugh YouTube. Once your live stream is connected, gto YouTube -> tap on the video icon (at the top right of the page near the profile icon) -> tap on "Go Live" -> tap on the "Share" button (top right of the page next to the profile icon) -> then copy and copy your YouTube link and share to whoever you want. NOTE: Make sure your privacy settings on the YouTube livestream are set to your desired setting.

Where to find the Twitch stream key?

ScoreCam supports two Twitch connection methods. The easiest is Twitch API (OAuth) mode — sign in to your Twitch account in-app and ScoreCam fetches the stream key automatically, no copy/paste required. This is the default and recommended option.

If you prefer Stream Key mode, here is where to find your key:

Twitch website:

  1. Go to dashboard.twitch.tv and sign in.
  2. Click Settings in the left sidebar → Stream.
  3. Your stream key is under Stream Key & PreferencesPrimary Stream Key. Click Copy.

Twitch mobile app:

  1. Tap your profile picture → Creator Dashboard.
  2. Tap the gear icon (Settings) → Stream.
  3. Your stream key is listed there.

Paste the key into ScoreCam’s Twitch account setup. Your viewers watch at twitch.tv/your_username — a permanent URL that never changes.

Live Stream works sporadically and I am seeing the live stream indicator as red or grey. How do I fix this?

Live streaming over cellular signal and/or WiFi isn’t always reliable where signal strength can fluctuate, causing dropped frames or even a failed live stream. This is especially true if you are using a public WiFi signal.

Trying to stream from within a large crowd of people can also cause connections issues. The cellular signal tends to degrade when lots of people are accessing the same network at the same time. This means that even if you appear to have 5 connection bars, the actual signal to your phone may be a fraction of what you need to sustain live streaming bandwidth.

Bandwidth is the key. Many other issues related to the network can also arise so if you are always having issues, you may want to contact your provider.

Another possible issue would be the Live Streaming service you are using where your stream key has expired or you have a setup issue. YouTube and other services are always changing the rules and configurations so make sure you have logged into the service and your setup is up-to-date.

YouTube (API) has been working fine until recently. Why can't I live stream anymore?

There are several reasons this can happen. Here are the most common causes:

1. You Have Exceeded the Daily Rate Limit

You are likely hitting a “User requests exceed the rate limit” issue with YouTube, which means you have exceeded the threshold for live streaming starts for that day. This commonly happens when you are testing the stream repeatedly — YouTube only allows so many stream “starts” before cutting you off, and stream duration does not matter. The solution is to wait until the next day and try again.

2. YouTube API Daily Quota Exceeded

YouTube’s Data API v3 gives each connected app a default quota of 10,000 units per day, which resets at midnight Pacific Time. Creating a live broadcast consumes quota units. If you have been live streaming frequently or testing repeatedly, you may have exhausted your daily quota. Wait for the quota to reset at midnight PT and try again.

3. Your Channel Is Not Eligible for Live Streaming

YouTube requires your channel to meet eligibility requirements before live streaming is enabled:

  • Your channel must be verified (phone verification via YouTube Studio)
  • Your channel must have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days
  • Mobile live streaming via third-party apps requires at least 1,000 subscribers

You can check your channel’s live streaming status in YouTube Studio → Features.

4. Your YouTube Authorization Has Expired

ScoreCam uses OAuth 2.0 to connect to your YouTube account. If the authorization has expired or been revoked, live streaming will fail. Go to ScoreCam’s Live Streaming settings and sign out of YouTube, then sign back in to re-authorize the app.

I can't Stream Live using Twitch. How do I fix this?

ScoreCam supports two ways to connect to Twitch. The troubleshooting steps depend on which one you set up:

Twitch (API) — OAuth Sign-In (recommended)

If you signed in to your Twitch account using the Setup Wizard, ScoreCam manages the connection automatically — no stream key required. If streaming fails:

  • Go to ScoreCam Settings → Live Stream Settings → tap your Twitch account → Sign Out, then sign back in to re-authorize
  • Make sure your Twitch account is in good standing and not suspended
  • Verify ScoreCam has internet access before tapping Start Streaming

Stream Key Mode (manual setup)

If you entered a stream link and key manually, verify these in Settings → Live Stream Settings → your account:

  • Stream Link: This is the RTMP server URL (e.g. rtmp://live.twitch.tv/app) — do not enter your stream key here, there is a separate field for that
  • Stream Key: Copy this exactly from your Twitch dashboard at dashboard.twitch.tv → Settings → Stream

Live stream to multiple services simultaneously?

ScoreCam streams to one destination at a time. To reach multiple platforms simultaneously, use a restreaming service as the single destination and let it fan out to multiple platforms:

  1. Create an account at Restream or Castr (both offer free tiers — check their websites for current pricing).
  2. In their dashboard, connect the platforms you want to stream to (YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, etc.).
  3. Get the RTMP URL and stream key from Restream or Castr.
  4. In ScoreCam: Settings → Live Streaming → Add Account → Other Service → enter the credentials.

ScoreCam sends one stream to Restream/Castr, which then relays it to all your connected platforms at once.

How do I set up live streaming for the first time?

Setting up live streaming in ScoreCam is easy — a step-by-step Live Streaming Setup Wizard will guide you through the entire process.

To launch the wizard:

  1. Go to ScoreCam Settings
  2. Toggle on Enable Live Stream
  3. The Setup Wizard will launch automatically

The wizard will walk you through:

  • Choosing your streaming service (YouTube, Twitch, or any custom RTMP service)
  • Signing in or entering your stream credentials
  • Configuring basic video and audio quality settings

For YouTube (API): The wizard uses secure OAuth sign-in — no stream key required. Tap “Sign in with YouTube” and follow the prompts to authorize ScoreCam.

For Twitch or other RTMP services: Enter your Stream Link (RTMP server URL) and Stream Key from your streaming service dashboard.

Once complete, your account is saved and you’re ready to go live. To add more accounts later, go to Settings → Live Streaming → Live Stream Settings and tap Setup New Account. To edit credentials or sign in/out, tap the pencil icon next to any account.

What is the screen that appears before I go live, and what do I fill in?

Each time you start a live stream in ScoreCam, a pre-stream setup screen appears. It lets you set event details and share your stream link with viewers before broadcasting begins. What you see depends on your streaming service:

YouTube (API)

  • Event Title (required) — becomes the broadcast title on YouTube
  • Description (optional)
  • Visibility — Private, Unlisted, or Public
  • Stream Latency — Normal (full DVR support), Low (good for sports), or Ultra-Low (shortest delay, no DVR rewind)

Tap Create Event — ScoreCam creates the broadcast on YouTube automatically and shows you the watch link. You can tap Share Link to send it to viewers before going live. Then tap Start Streaming.

Twitch

  • Stream Title (optional) — updates your Twitch channel title when you tap Start Streaming
  • Your Twitch channel URL (e.g. twitch.tv/yourname) is shown with a Share button so you can send it to viewers

Tap Start Streaming to go live.

Custom RTMP / Sharable Link

  • Your stream’s viewer link (set in your account settings) is displayed with a Share button

Tap Start Streaming to go live.

Your settings (title, description, visibility, latency) are remembered from the last time you streamed, so you only need to change them when something is different.

Does Live Stream Replay affect performance during live streaming?

Live Stream Replay uses a background shadow recording — a second, lower-bitrate video file written to temporary storage while you stream. When you trigger a replay, this buffer is what gets played back.

When shadow recording actually runs:

  • Streaming only (no local recording): Shadow recording is active.
  • Streaming and recording at the same time: Shadow recording is not active — the main recording file is used as the replay source, so there is zero additional overhead in this mode.
  • Streaming with Space Saver mode: Shadow recording is active (Space Saver clips are fragmented and can’t be used directly for replay).

How much extra CPU does it use?

When shadow recording is running, ScoreCam runs two simultaneous H.264 hardware encoders. However, it is not double the work:

  • The GPU compositing is already happening for the live stream — the shadow recorder reuses the same processed frames with no extra rendering.
  • The shadow file is encoded at a much lower bitrate (~750 Kbps vs. 2–4 Mbps typical for the stream), so the second encode pass is lighter than the first.

In practice, expect roughly 10–20% additional CPU when shadow recording is active. The bigger concern on long events is thermal throttling: two concurrent encode sessions generate more heat, which can cause the device to reduce performance over time. If you notice frame rate drops during long streams, try disabling Live Stream Replay (App Settings › Live Stream Replay) when you don’t need it.

What transition styles are available for Live Stream Replay?

Live Stream Replay offers three transition animations that play when entering and exiting the replay. Set your preference in App Settings › Live Stream Replay › Transition Style.

  • Logo Zoom — Your branded logo springs in from the center of the screen, holds briefly, then rockets off-screen before the replay plays. On exit, the logo collapses back as the live view returns. Logo Zoom has a dedicated settings screen to customize entry speed, hold duration, exit speed, logo size, and scale range.
  • Flash Freeze — A quick white flash freezes the frame and transitions into the replay. A second flash returns to live. Clean and fast — great for high-energy sports.
  • Broadcast Wipe — A colored band sweeps across the screen to reveal the replay, then sweeps back to return to live. A classic broadcast-style effect.

Logo Zoom is composited onto the stream — stream viewers see the logo animation too. Flash Freeze and Broadcast Wipe are device-only effects; stream viewers see a direct cut to the replay footage. The stream resumes live video as soon as the replay ends.

Can I use my own logo or image in the Live Stream Replay transition?

Yes — the Logo Zoom transition style supports a custom image. You can use your team logo, school mascot, sponsor graphic, or any image you choose.

To set a custom transition image:

  1. Go to App Settings › Live Stream Replay › Transition Style
  2. Make sure Logo Zoom is selected
  3. Tap Transition Image and choose from your photo library or take a new photo

The image is saved inside the app and does not need to stay in your photo library. For best results, use a PNG with a transparent background so the logo blends cleanly with the video behind it. If no custom image is set, the ScoreCam logo is used by default.

You can also control how the logo appears using the Logo Zoom settings: entry speed, hold duration, exit speed, logo size (as a percentage of the screen width), and start/end scale (how large the logo grows as it rockets off-screen).

Does Live Stream Replay slow motion affect the live stream or just the device screen?

Both. When you set a slow motion speed (e.g. 0.5x) in App Settings › Live Stream Replay › Playback Speed, the replay plays at that speed on both the device screen and the live stream simultaneously.

Stream viewers will see the replay footage playing in slow motion, just like the broadcaster sees it on the device. The slow motion setting applies to every replay trigger until you change it. It takes effect on the next replay — the speed cannot change mid-replay.

Playback speed ranges from 0.25x (quarter speed) to 1.0x (normal speed).

Can ScoreCam connect to a YouTube broadcast I've already scheduled?

Yes — if you pre-schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio, ScoreCam can connect directly to that existing event instead of creating a new one. This keeps your viewer link, title, description, and scheduled time exactly as you set them up in Studio.

Requirements: YouTube API (OAuth) mode must be selected for your YouTube account in ScoreCam. Stream Key mode does not support this workflow.

How to connect to a scheduled event:

  1. Tap Go Live in ScoreCam to open the YouTube pre-stream sheet.
  2. At the top, switch to the Scheduled tab. ScoreCam fetches your channel’s upcoming events.
  3. Tap the event you want to stream to — a checkmark appears on the selected row.
  4. Tap Connect to Event. ScoreCam links to that broadcast and retrieves the RTMP stream credentials.
  5. Tap Start Streaming to go live.

If the scheduled event already has a stream bound, ScoreCam reuses it. If no stream is bound yet, ScoreCam creates one automatically. Tapping Cancel after selecting a scheduled event leaves the broadcast intact on YouTube — ScoreCam only deletes a broadcast on cancel if it created a brand-new one.

What bitrate should I use for live streaming?

ScoreCam automatically sets a recommended bitrate when you choose a resolution, but you can adjust it any time in Settings → Live Streaming → your account (pencil icon) → Bitrate.

Recommended starting points:

  • 480p / 540p  @ 30fps — 1,500 Kbps
  • 720p @ 30fps — 2,500 Kbps
  • 720p @ 60fps — 3,500 Kbps
  • 1080p @ 30fps — 4,500 Kbps
  • 1080p @ 60fps — 6,000 Kbps
  • 1440p @ 30fps — 8,000 Kbps
  • 1440p @ 60fps — 9,000 Kbps
  • 4K @ 30fps — 15,000 Kbps
  • 4K @ 60fps — 25,000 Kbps

These values look great for most viewers and work well on typical home and venue upload speeds. If your connection is rock-solid and you want the absolute sharpest image — especially during fast movement — you can increase the bitrate. Most viewers will not notice a difference above the recommended values.

Upload speed rule of thumb: your upload speed should be at least 1.5× your bitrate. For a 4,500 Kbps stream you need roughly 7 Mbps of sustained upload available.

Note: Twitch enforces a hard maximum of 6,000 Kbps regardless of what you enter. ScoreCam will warn you if your bitrate exceeds this limit.

If your stream looks blocky or pixelated despite a sufficient bitrate, check your upload speed stability and consider enabling Adaptive Bitrate (Settings → Live Streaming → Adaptive Bitrate) so ScoreCam can adjust automatically when your connection fluctuates.

ScoreCam » General

Is there anyway to quickly hide/show the scoreboard?

From ScoreCam, the easiest way to hide/show the scoreboard is to tap the video timer (example: tap on 00:00:00) at the top of the screen. This will quickly hide/show the scoreboard.

From the ScoreCam app, there are two other ways you can do this:  (1) Go to ScoreCam Settings -> Scoreboard (at the top of the page) -> then disable “Show Scoreboard.” (2) Tap and hold on the scoreboard -> then disable “Show Scoreboard” (at the top of the page).

On the Scoreboard Remote app, you can do this by going to Settings (gear icon on the top right of the page) -> Controls -> then enable “Hide ScoreCam Scoreboard.”

Is there a way to control ScoreCam from a different device?

Can ScoreCam record videos at 60 fps (frames per second)?

Yes, ScoreCam supports 60 fps recording at 720p, 1080p, and 4K. To change the video resolution, open Settings → Video Camera (PRO) → Custom Settings → Video Resolution and select the desired option.

Device recommendations: For the smoothest 60fps results, an iPhone 12 or later is recommended. On older devices, the app displays a performance warning when you select a 60fps or 4K setting — you can still use it, but some frames may be dropped depending on device load. 4K at 60fps may occasionally drop a few frames even on newer hardware.

Higher frame rates produce smoother motion but significantly increase file size. At 8 Mbps (the default bitrate), 60fps video uses roughly twice the storage of the same resolution at 30fps.

I shut down the app before my video saved, did I lose it?

If you left the app while recording, the ScoreCam will pause the video for you and you can continue recording. If you forced closed the app while recording, the video will end but you should not lose any video footage. To find any lost videos, click on the Photo Library icon (at the top of the page, to the left of the settings icon) -> tap on "Recovered Videos" at the bottom of the page. From there you can save your recovered videos to your main photo library.

How much space do I need for my videos?

Space requirements depend on the recording quality you choose. Here are approximate sizes per minute of footage:

  • 720p @ 30fps — ~40 MB/min
  • 1080p @ 30fps (default) — ~60 MB/min
  • 1080p @ 60fps — ~120 MB/min
  • 4K @ 30fps — ~170 MB/min
  • 4K @ 60fps — varies by device, can exceed 300 MB/min

A typical 90-minute game at 1080p 30fps uses about 5–6 GB. Use HEVC encoding (Settings → Video Camera → Video Codec → High Efficiency) to cut file sizes roughly in half at the same quality.

Running low on space?

  • Record at a lower resolution or frame rate
  • Use HEVC encoding (50% smaller than H.264 at comparable quality)
  • Save recordings to an external USB-C drive — connect a compatible drive and enable Settings → External Drive Recording. Files go directly to the drive and never fill your device.

Unable to edit in Pinnacle Studio (no image or sound)

ScoreCam records in standard H.264 or HEVC (H.265) format. Both are widely supported by modern video editing software, including current versions of Pinnacle Studio.

If you are seeing import or playback issues, try these steps:

  1. Switch to the most compatible format — In ScoreCam: Settings → Video Camera (PRO) → Enable Custom Video Settings → Video Codec → Most Compatible (H.264). Record a short test clip and try importing it again.
  2. Export from Photos first — Open the video in the iPhone Photos app, tap Share, then Save Video. This re-encodes using Apple’s standard export and can resolve compatibility issues with some editors.
  3. Use HandBrake (free, handbrake.fr) to convert the video to a format your editor accepts.
  4. Make sure Pinnacle Studio is up to date — older versions may not support HEVC playback.

When uploading to YouTube (using the YouTube app), I get an “error uploading video”. How do I fix this?

If you are trying to upload a long video you should change your display settings (Settings -> Display and Brightness -> Auto Lock -> Never) to prevent the screen from locking.

If you don't and your screen auto-locks, the video will never complete the upload. Be sure to contact YouTube to make them aware of this issue.

How do I lock the focus on ScoreCam and turn off auto focus to prevent focus hunting?

To turn off/disable auto focus, tap and hold on the center of the screen, and at the top of the page it should say in yellow "AE/AF Locked." This means that auto focus is turned off and you are setting the focus and exposure of the camera on a specific point. The camera icon at the top left of the page (right next to the bluetooth icon) should be yellow when "AE/AF Locked" is enabled. To disable "AE/AF Locked," simply tap and hold the anywhere on the screen again, and at the top of the page it should say in yellow "Auto Enabled."

Record without livestream, hide controls

To record without live streaming, simply turn off the Live Streaming toggle:

Settings → toggle off “Enable Live Streaming”

When live streaming is off, the stream controls are hidden and no RTMP connection is made when you press Record. ScoreCam records to your Photos library (or external drive) as normal.

If you want to hide the on-screen scoring controls from the camera view while recording:

  • Connect a Scoreboard Remote and enable Settings → Scoreboard Remote → Hide Controls When Connected. Controls disappear from the camera device once the Remote is connected.
  • Use the Controls Transparency slider in Scoreboard Settings → Game Clock to make the controls semi-transparent so they draw less attention.

Windows user: get recordings off device without iTunes

iTunes for Windows has been replaced by the Apple Devices app. There are also several other ways to transfer videos from iPhone to a Windows PC:

  1. Apple Devices app (Windows 10/11) — Install from the Microsoft Store. Connect your iPhone via USB, open Apple Devices, and use File Sharing to transfer videos.
  2. Windows File Explorer (USB) — Connect your iPhone via USB, unlock the device, and tap Trust This Computer if prompted. Your iPhone appears in File Explorer under “This PC” as a portable device. Browse to Internal Storage → DCIM to find your videos.
  3. iCloud for Windows — Install iCloud from the Microsoft Store, enable iCloud Photos on your iPhone, and photos/videos sync automatically to your PC.
  4. AirDrop to Mac, then transfer — If you have a Mac nearby, AirDrop the video to it and then transfer to the Windows PC.

ScoreCam is taking up a ton of disk space

ScoreCam videos are saved in your iPhone’s Photos library, which is the largest contributor to app storage. Here are ways to reduce it:

  1. Delete recordings you no longer need — Open the Photos app, find your ScoreCam album, and delete videos you have already transferred or backed up. Remember to also empty the Recently Deleted album to reclaim the space immediately.
  2. Save future recordings to an external USB-C drive — Connect a compatible drive and enable Settings → External Drive Recording. Recordings go directly to the drive and never fill your device at all.
  3. Use HEVC encoding — Settings → Video Camera (PRO) → Custom Settings → Video Codec → High Efficiency. HEVC files are roughly half the size of H.264 at the same quality level.
  4. Record at lower resolution — Dropping from 4K to 1080p, or from 60fps to 30fps, significantly reduces file size.
  5. Enable iCloud Photos — Videos upload to iCloud and can be removed from device storage while remaining available to stream. Requires sufficient iCloud storage.

Does ScoreCam create a Highlight Reel from my recording?

Yes! ScoreCam includes a Highlight Reel feature that automatically compiles key moments from your recording into a shorter highlight video — great for sharing after a game.

To enable Highlight Reel:

  1. Go to ScoreCam Settings
  2. Find the Highlights section
  3. Enable Highlight Reel

You can also choose the Transition Style between highlight clips in the same settings area.

How highlights are captured: Highlights are marked during the recording session. When your recording ends, ScoreCam automatically compiles the marked moments into a reel and saves it alongside your full recording.

Tip: You can find your saved Highlight Reels in the ScoreCam library (tap the library icon at the top of the screen).

  1. Go to ScoreCam Settings
  2. Find the Highlights section
  3. Set Highlights mode to Save After (clips saved when recording ends) or Save During (each clip saved immediately as you tap)

Step 2: Capture a highlight while recording

  1. Start your recording as normal
  2. When a key moment happens, tap the Highlight button (the star icon on the recording screen)
  3. A duration picker appears — choose how many seconds to capture (e.g. 10s, 15s, 20s, or “Since Pause”)
  4. ScoreCam clips that portion and saves it to your Photos library

You can tap the Highlight button as many times as you like during a single session. All clips are saved to your ScoreCam album in Photos.

Tip: Want ScoreCam to stitch all your clips into one video automatically? Enable Highlight Reel in Settings → Highlights. See also: Does ScoreCam create a Highlight Reel from my recordings?

Will my settings be restored if I delete and reinstall ScoreCam?

Yes — ScoreCam automatically backs up your settings to iCloud each time the app goes to the background. If you delete and reinstall ScoreCam, your settings are restored from iCloud on the very first launch.

What is restored: All app preferences (team names, colors, scoreboard profiles, highlight settings, video format, and all other settings), plus the five data libraries (Scoreboard Profiles, Team Library, Game Type, Description, and Score Type). Logo and branding images are not included because iCloud’s key-value storage limit is too small for binary files.

To verify it is enabled: iOS Settings → ScoreCam → Support → Restore Settings After Reinstall should be toggled ON (it is on by default).

To start fresh on reinstall: Turn this toggle OFF before deleting the app. When turned off, the existing iCloud backup is removed immediately, so a subsequent reinstall will start with default settings.

My iPhone stops recording due to high temperature. How can I prevent this?

iPhones have a built-in thermal protection system that will stop recording if the device gets too hot. This is most likely to happen during long sessions where you are recording and live streaming at the same time, especially at high quality settings.

Settings changes that help the most:

  • Switch from 60fps to 30fps — This is the single biggest change you can make. The easiest way is to turn off Custom Video Settings in Settings → Video Output, which resets the frame rate back to the default 30fps.
  • Lower your recording bitrate — In Settings → Video Output, reduce the bitrate to 8–10 Mbps. For HEVC (H.265), this still produces excellent quality video.
  • Lower your live stream bitrate — In Live Stream Settings, reduce the video bitrate to 4,000–4,500 kbps. This is plenty for 1080p 30fps.
  • Turn off Instant Replay — If you are not actively using the replay feature, turn it off in Settings → Replay. It runs a background recording buffer the entire session, adding to the processing load.

Physical tips:

  • Remove your iPhone from its case during recording — cases trap heat.
  • Keep the phone out of direct sunlight.
  • A small clip-on fan pointed at the phone makes a noticeable difference during long outdoor or gym sessions.

How do different recording and streaming settings affect heat on my iPhone?

ScoreCam does demanding video processing that makes it more heat-intensive than a standard camera app. The table below shows the relative heat load for common configurations, with recording-only at 1080p 30fps as the baseline (1.0). Higher numbers mean proportionally more heat.

These figures apply mainly to iPhone X, XS, XR, and iPhone 11. Newer iPhones (iPhone 12 and later) handle all of these configurations with much less heat — see Which iPhone models handle ScoreCam best?

ConfigurationLoadHeat on iPhone X–11
Record 1080p @ 30fps (baseline)1.0Warm — normal
Stream Only 1080p @ 30fps1.1Warm
Stream Only 1080p @ 30fps + Replay1.3Warm–Hot
Stream + Record 1080p @ 30fps1.4Hot
Record 1080p @ 60fps1.5Hot
Stream Only 1080p @ 60fps1.6Hot
Stream + Record 1080p @ 30fps + Replay1.6Very hot
Stream Only 1080p @ 60fps + Replay1.9Very hot
Stream + Record 1080p @ 60fps2.1Very hot — may throttle
Stream + Record 1080p @ 60fps + Replay2.4Extreme — throttle likely

Why does 60fps add so much heat? ScoreCam draws the scoreboard overlay on every single video frame. At 60fps the GPU does twice as much rendering work as at 30fps — switching to 30fps is the single most effective change you can make.

Why do recording and streaming together add more heat? Each active mode (local recording, live streaming, replay buffer) runs its own independent video encoder. More encoders running at the same time means more sustained heat.

Which iPhone models handle ScoreCam best? Does my iPhone model affect heat?

All iPhones can run ScoreCam, but older models are more sensitive to heat during long or demanding sessions — especially when live streaming at 60fps.

iPhone GenerationChipHeat Sensitivity
iPhone X, XS, XS Max, XRA11, A12High — sustained 60fps + streaming will throttle
iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro MaxA13Moderate — manageable with care at 60fps
iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro MaxA14Low — handles most configurations without issue
iPhone 13, 14, 15 (non-Pro)A15, A16, A17Very low — rarely a concern
iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, 17 Pro / MaxA17 Pro – A19 ProNegligible — dedicated media engine handles everything efficiently

If you are on an iPhone X or 11 and seeing heat warnings, the most effective changes are switching from 60fps to 30fps and turning off Live Stream Replay when not in use. See: My iPhone stops recording due to high temperature. How can I prevent this?
